The hearing was adjourned to April 11 and will run to April 26, 2024.

A senior DCI officer has narrated to the court how he was stupefied and robbed of Sh1.5 million.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina on Wednesday, Paul Mumo Maingo said on March 20, 2023, at around 11 pm, he was requested by a colleague to drop him within Ruiru, along Thika Road.

After dropping his co-worker, he opted to go revelling at a club in Juja.

Five minutes after ordering his beer, a man and two women entered the club and sat at the same table as Maingo.

The three also ordered their drinks and after drinking for a while, one of the women moved to sit with the victim.

They talked for a while. The man would later find himself alone in his car.

“I was feeling dizzy at the time, I vomited and I could feel my mind was not stable,” he said.

Maingo said at the time, the car’s ignition was on and the car was still running.

Terrified at the moment, he checked for his phones only to find out that they were missing, alongside his wallet and wristwatch.

The two phones were worth Sh155,000; a Samsung S22 worth Sh105,000 and a Samsung S9 worth Sh50,000

His watch make iPhone was valued at Sh150,000 and in his wallet was Sh15,000.

He also lost personal documents including two ATM cards from Absa Bank, business cards and a national ID card.

Still shocked, Maingo drove to his house and called his driver, Corporal Mwangangi.

He then used Mwangangi’s phone to contact his relations manager at the Absa Bank, suspecting that his accounts could have been interfered with.

He would find out that there was a series of withdrawals amounting to Sh1,154,081.

After alerting the bank, Maingo made his way to Belleview South Hospital in Nairobi where he was attended to.

He was treated, put under observation and released the following day at 4pm.

Immediately after the release, the man drove to Ruiru Police Station and reported his ordeal on the night of March 20/21, 2023.

He also made the same report to the KICC Police Station and DCI Headquarters along Kiambu Road.

The case was assigned to the banking fraud investigation unit and the forensic team at DCI HQs.

When the forensic team retrieved the club’s CCTV footage, Maingo was able to positively identify one of the accused persons.

The footage was however not played in court after the defence said they were yet to receive it.

Onyina directed the state to ensure that the same is supplied to the other side, alongside any other footage or document pending.

The hearing was adjourned to April 11 and will run to April 26, 2024.

In the case, the accused persons include Everlyne Wambui, Janet Wanjiru, David Wanjogo and Ibrahim Mwangi.

The four are charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, stupefying to commit a felony, stealing and engaging in organised criminal activities.

Wanjiru and Wambui were separately charged with having Kenya National ID belonging to other persons. They all denied the charges.
