Onyango Tate, the Mount Kenya University (MKU) student who gained online attention for his viral “Escape the Matrix” video, that rubbished the calibre of education in universities in this digital era.

The contents of the video earned him a suspension from MKU for “incitement”.

Onyango now finds himself entangled in a legal predicament with law enforcement over stolen laptops,

In a video circulating online, shared on March 11, Onyango alleges that he has been wrongfully arrested.

“I’m being set up guys, they’ve brought out fake footage linking me to a crime that I wasn’t involved in neither have any idea about. Someone is after me. I was headed to the gym minding my own business then got arrested,” he said in the now-viral video.

Expressing concerns for his safety, Onyango appeals for assistance in the unsettling situation.

Onyango’s tumultuous relationship with MKU dates back to October 2023 when he was suspended for alleged incitement.

The suspension stemmed from a TikTok video where Onyango questioned the value of higher education and made light-hearted remarks about vehicles owned by university lecturers.

“This exam paper is meant to test our knowledge, but how does memorising these definitions translate to financial success? Sure, we can define terms perfectly, but where’s the practical application that leads to wealth?”

In the same footage, he pointed towards the vehicles parked behind him, presumably belonging to lecturers, as a symbol of what he perceived as a lack of achievement in life.

As a consequence of his actions, the university suspended Onyango for the semester spanning from September to December 2023, with an expectation of his return in January 2024.

Additionally, MKU issued a final warning to Onyango, cautioning that any further infractions could result in expulsion.

In response to his suspension, Onyango uploaded a separate video disputing the reasons behind his punishment.

He refuted allegations of inciting other students to misconduct, as stated in the suspension notice.
