KU Appeals For Financial Help As It Mourns 11 Crash Victims

Kenyatta University has asked for financial support following a grisly road accident that claimed the lives of 11 students on Monday.

The 11 students were among a group of 58 who were heading to Mombasa for an academic trip when one of their school bus collided with a trailer at Maungu in Voi.

The university said it is raising funds to offset medical bills and funeral services among other expenses.

“Kenyatta University humbly reaches out to you for financial support following the tragic road accident at Maungu, Voi that claimed 11 students and left many casualties,” the university said in a statement on Saturday.

“The tragedy has left our KU community shaken. We earnestly seek your support for all those impacted to help defray medical, funeral and other expenses.”

Well-wishers have been requested to send their contributions through the university’s bank account.

KU will on Sunday hold a memorial service for the 11 students.

The memorial service will be held at the Kenyatta University Graduation Square Grounds from 9am.

“Together, we will pay tribute, celebrate and commemorate the lasting impact of these exceptional individuals on the University community,” a statement from the University said.

The students who were involved in the accident were from the School of Public Health.

The university management released their names.

They are Navile Omondi Opiyo, Beneas Otieno,  Hellen Mbula Kisilu, Michael Muteti, Vallary Akinyi Ouma and Oslo Mwendwa.

Others are Felix Gori Nyaata, Austine Omondi Owino, Rodger Kiprotich Rono, John Mbiriri Mureithi and Patricia Murugi Mwangi.

The bodies of the 11 were transported to Kenyatta University Hospital Morgue where they are preserved awaiting burial processes.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu described the road accident as devastating not only to the higher institution but to the education community at large.

“Our hearts are heavy with grief as we mourn the tragic death of young precious lives in a road accident involving Kenyatta University students who were on an academic trip at the coast,”  the CS said.

“Our deepest condolences go to the families and friends and loved ones of those who lost their lives. Our thoughts are with many others who were injured.”
