Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has said he would continue to seek reconciliation of leaders, particularly in Mt.Kenya region, following the highly divisive 2022 elections.

He emphasized the need for all leaders to put aside their differences and forge ahead as a united front.

Speaking at the burial of Dorcas Wangari Muhihu at Kaibaga, Nyandarua County, Gachagua reiterated his commitment in ensuring and promoting peace amongst the leaders.

In the same breath, the deputy President called for sobriety in addressing political disagreements, telling leaders to set a good example to be emulated by those they lead.

“What is happening in Bungoma is retrogressive. We are asking Kenyans to solve political issues without violence,” he said.

The deputy President was responding to a call by former presidential candidate George Wajackoya, who urged him to intervene on the situation.

“Whatever is happening in Bungoma is not good, it is not good that people are throwing stones at each other. As the deputy president, come and talk to them so that they maintain peace like in Mt Kenya,” Wajackoyah implored Gachagua.

The clergy backed the deputy president’s call for reconciliation saying it would bless the nation.

“When forgiveness is sought from such a high position, blessings befall the Nation. We pray that since this is from deep in the heart, there will be a reciprocal from the other side. Let us spread the message of forgiveness throughout the nation and there will be no animosity,” Pastor Pius Muiru said.

Other national leader’s in attendance threw their weight behind the deputy President’s call for unity.

The deputy President has also reiterated his commitment to end the menace of illicit brew as well as continue the reforms in the tea and coffee sub sector.

“On alcohol, Nyandarua was the first county to pass the law, so for the security in this county, please work,” he stated.

Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha hailed Gachagua for his efforts to unite the region.

“As people of Nyandarua, we respect you as our leader and you have our full support. The fight against illicit brews has come at the right time. Our young men and women are now sober and asking for jobs instead of handouts. You are also doing great with coffee and tea. We shall support you,” he said.
