One person was on Tuesday night apprehended following a police chase that led to the seizure of suspected marijuana valued at Ksh.37 million.

According to a police report, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) together with officers from Genoso police station trailed a convoy of four vehicles along the Migori-Kisii highway at around 11 pm.

The convoy included two Toyota Proboxes and two Toyota Hiace Matatus.

“The occupants on realising they were being trailed, the driver of motor vehicle Toyota Probox sped off that prompted officers to make a chase and fired two rounds of 9mm to deflate the tyres,” read the report.

“The driver abandoned the said motor vehicle and fled to [an] unknown destination with injuries since blood stains were spotted inside the driver seat.”

The other occupant Joseph Nisa Ouma, 39, was arrested and was found in possession of Ksh.30,000 of different denominations believed to be proceeds of the crime.

Police believe that he is the main trafficker.
The two matatus were also abandoned by their drivers and were towed to Genoso police station.

A search conducted in the impounded cars led to the recovery of fifty sacks “containing brooms of green dry plant material suspected to be bhang of approximate street value of Ksh.37.5 million”.

Also recovered was a number plate number KCQ 548L concealed behind the driver’s seat of one of the matatus.

Meanwhile, plans are underway to escort the suspect and the motor vehicles to DCI headquarters.
