On Saturday, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri visited the Mai Mahiu Disaster Recovery Center to assess the response efforts following recent devastating flash floods.

Accompanied by Major General John Nkoimo and Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, General Kahariri reviewed ongoing search and recovery missions, which have seen over 300 residents displaced, 112 injured, and 52 lives lost, with operations ongoing to locate missing individuals.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) joined the multi-agency response team on Tuesday, collaborating with government departments, Nakuru County, and NGOs to bolster search and recovery efforts. General Kahariri emphasized the KDF’s role in safeguarding Kenyan lives during national emergencies, underscoring the importance of teamwork and coordination.

After updates on operations, he visited temporary accommodations for flood victims and inspected impacted sites like Georges and Magathi bridges, overseeing the setup of a new rescue center.

Governor Kihika expressed gratitude for the KDF’s support, acknowledging its vital contribution to the recovery efforts, which followed the Mai Mahiu tragedy on April 29, 2024, triggered by water accumulation in a tunnel along the old Kijabe Road due to blockage along the Meter Gauge Railway.
