Coast Media FC emerged as the champions of the World Press Freedom Day Beach Super Cup, held at Nyali Beach, Mombasa County, after defeating Mombasa Walk Movement FC with a score of 2-1 on Sunday.
Mark Mutuku, the captain of Coast Media FC, was awarded the man of the match for his exceptional performance, scoring a brace, one goal in each half, to secure the title for the Coast “forth estate” team.
Muhammad Ridhwani managed to score a consolation goal for Mombasa Walk Movement.
The men’s Coast Media team was led by experienced players Brian Otieno from The Star and Erick Ochieng from Baraka FM, with Abdulaziz Abeid guarding the goal.
Head coach Dickens Obiero of Coast Media FC expressed his delight after guiding his team to victory.
“We are not used to Beach Games but I’m happy our team gave everything despite taking on a team that is always on the beach,” said Obiero.
Coast Media FC’s Patricia Mbiti Leads Victory in Ladies Category
In the ladies category, Coast Media FC’s captain, Patricia Mbiti, scored twice in each half, including one from the penalty spot, to secure the win. Zubeda Pendo managed to score the lone goal for the Walkers.
Press Freedom Day Celebrations in Mombasa
The 2024 Press Freedom Day was celebrated differently in Mombasa, beginning with a 10km walk from Kenol at Nyali Center to Nyali Beach, where a beach cleaning activity was organized.
Press Freedom Day Theme: “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of Environment Crisis”
This year’s celebration theme focused on “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of Environment Crisis.” The press team organized a session with the public to educate them on the importance of conserving the environment, particularly the beach line.
The celebrations received a boost from sponsorship by KPA and Bandari Sacco.
