The body of Morren Wangui, a 29-year-old woman, who drowned after reportedly jumping into river Nyamindi with her baby strapped on her back, has been found. According to residents of Kabiroini village in Gichugu, Kirinyaga, her body was discovered approximately 10 kilometers downstream.
“The body was discovered by residents who were out harvesting grass on the riverbanks,” said Wangui’s uncle Stephen Kinyua.
Stephen said that they were called to the scene to identify the body.
“The people who found the body said that they had heard the news on Inooro FM, about a woman who had drowned with her child, and so they decided to inform the authorities, as well as pass the message to us family members,” said Stephen.
The family reported that the body of the five-year-old child was recovered from the river on Saturday night after extensive search efforts by both the family and local residents who had been camping at the river.
Alongside the child’s body, a third body, belonging to an unidentified man, was also found by the search party. Gichugu sub-county police commander Johnson Wachira confirmed the incident, stating that witnesses, including a coffee factory watchman, had observed the woman throwing herself into the river with her child.
The bodies were taken to Kibugi Funeral Home Kutus, where the child’s body was also transported, while the third body was taken to Kerugoya mortuary for identification.
