On Tuesday, May 21, three school-going children tragically drowned in Kwa Munyenze Dam, located in Machakos County.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the young girls were washing clothes at the dam when the incident occurred. Kinyau Assistant Chief Juliana Katumbi confirmed the tragic event, stating that one of the girls was a Form 1 student at Kinyui Girls High School, while the other two were in Grades 6 and 3 at a local primary school.

Katumbi expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that their deaths have left the community in shock and confusion.

She suggested that it is likely one girl drowned first, and the others perished while attempting to save her.

“The sequence of events is still a mystery. However, it is suspected that one child may have drowned initially, and the others died while attempting to save her,” Katumbi explained.

During the incident, a boy who did not enter the dam was found safe at the scene when locals arrived to retrieve the bodies. This incident has cast a pall over the community, with many grieving the untimely loss of the young lives.
