Victor Wanyama’s goal for FC Montreal in the Canadian Championship quarter-final match against Forge was a glimmer of hope in what ultimately ended in disappointment for his team.

Despite being down 2-0 at halftime and facing elimination, Wanyama’s second-half header from a corner kick injected new energy into Montreal’s efforts to turn the tide.

Unfortunately, despite their continued pressure and attempts to secure two more goals needed to win the tie, Forge’s strong defense held firm, resulting in a 2-1 victory for Montreal on the night but a 3-2 aggregate loss.

This defeat marked FC Montreal’s first loss to a Canadian Premier League side and only the third time a CPL team had eliminated an MLS side from the Canadian Championship.

Despite the outcome, Wanyama’s commitment to the team is evident, as he accepted a significant salary cut at the start of the season to continue playing for CF Montreal. Even after the reduction, he remains the highest earner at the club. His signing in March 2020 was a significant move, making him one of the most valuable players in the league at the time.
