In a troubling incident in Baringo County, two individuals, including a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier, sustained gunshot wounds during a confrontation with bandits in a village.

The incident occurred on Saturday, May 25, along the Moinonin Loruk section in Baringo.

Reports suggest that approximately 100 armed bandits raided a village near the Moinonin IDP camp, targeting local families and stealing over 140 goats. Witnesses recounted the gang’s initial attack on a village, resulting in harm to a woman, and noted the resistance faced by the arriving police team.

A confrontation ensued between the bandits and a military patrol team, resulting in injuries to one soldier. Witnesses described the bandits as well-organized and determined in their actions, with one faction engaging security forces while another made off with the stolen animals.

The incident occurred amid a relatively peaceful period following previous attacks, leading displaced individuals to return to their homes.

However, the bandits’ strike caused further turmoil and highlighted ongoing security challenges in the region.

In response to the attack, the KDF deployed three helicopters to the area. Two helicopters pursued the attackers, while the third airlifted the injured soldier. Subsequently, military gunship aircraft targeted the bandits’ hideouts with missiles and bombs, although the outcome in terms of casualties remains unclear.

Locals reported seeing the bandits surveying the area a day before the attack, but despite informing the police, no action was taken.

The region continues to grapple with banditry issues, prompting Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to take charge of security operations with a promise to eradicate banditry.
