Ayoub El Kaabi’s decisive goal four minutes from the end of extra time sealed Olympiakos’ victory over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final, making them the first Greek side to claim a European trophy.

El Kaabi, who had been instrumental in Olympiakos’ journey to the final, headed in Santiago Hezze’s cross to secure the historic win at the AEK Arena in Athens.

The goal, confirmed after a lengthy VAR check, marked El Kaabi’s 11th of the competition and cemented Olympiakos’ place in Greek footballing history.

This triumph comes as a significant moment for the club, especially after Fiorentina’s heartbreak in last season’s final against West Ham.

In a match marked by intense exchanges, Olympiakos showcased their attacking prowess early on, with Daniel Podence threatening Fiorentina’s defense. However, clear-cut chances were few, with both teams unable to capitalize on their opportunities.

As the game progressed, it seemed destined for a penalty shootout until El Kaabi rose to the occasion once again, adding to his heroics from the semi-finals against Aston Villa.

This victory not only makes history for Olympiakos but also for Greek football, with Panathinaikos being the only previous Greek team to reach a European final in 1971.

El Kaabi’s goal, scored in the twilight of extra time, solidified Olympiakos’ status as underdogs turned champions and etched his name in the club’s folklore, showcasing the culmination of his journey across various leagues before finding success in Greece.
