Human rights defenders have raised concern over rising land cases in Migori County involving widows.

With a number of widows embroiled in land tussles spending years in the court corridors seeking justice, the lobby group has urged all government agencies dealing with land issues to deliver justice to the people affected.

Mary Atieno who was narrating her ordeal during a public engagement on lands right at Kakrao trading centre organized by the Civil Society Network said she has tried to repossess her land in vain.

Atieno said she went to the registrar of land several years back and instead of getting the necessary assistance the registrar of land destroyed the land title deed she had and sent her away. Her effort to get justice has remained futile for the past ten years.

Bearice Minayo, a resident of Kakrao is undergoing a similar obstacle as her land was taken by one of the family members more than ten years ago.

She said the court advised that they settle the dispute at family level. Unfortunately this has not materialized.
