Police in Nairobi are on the spot following the Thursday evening fatal shooting of a protestor during the ongoing Gen Z-led demonstrations opposing the proposed Finance Bill 2024.
The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Rex Kanyike. He is currently lying at the City Mortuary Morgue.
Austin Arnold, a lawyer privy to the matter, told Citizen Digital that Kanyike was heading home at around 7pm in the company of a friend when he was shot in the knee outside Hilton Hotel along Moi Avenue by a rogue cop using live rounds.
The bullet remained lodged in his body until he passed away from excessive bleeding.
It is reported that he spent more than 20 minutes trying to seek medical attention before being rushed to Bliss Medical Centre along Moi Avenue where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
“I have spent the night with the family of Rex and we have delivered the body to City Mortuary for Post-Mortem in the morning. It is a shattered family. They are clinging to hope, because that’s all they can do,” Arnold said.
Activist Boniface Mwangi also confirmed the incident in an X statement, highlighting that he met the parents of the deceased following the incident.
“I’m sharing pictures of 24-year-old Rex Kanyike lying the in morgue with consent from his parents, Chrispin Odawa and Gillian Munyao whp are standing over his body at the City Mortuary,” said Mwangi.
“He was killed by the police this evening. They’re shocked and numb from the loss of their son.”
