A woman recounted to an Eldoret court how she purchased clothing resembling the uniform of a local airline to gain entry into the airport and watch planes take off and land. She is accused of impersonating an employee of Skyward Limited Company at the airport, where she was detected and arrested.

Everlyne Amondi will remain in police custody for four more days to allow the police to complete their investigation into the alleged crime. Eldoret Senior Principal Magistrate Mogire Onkoba ordered her detention at the central police station pending her court appearance next Monday for plea-taking.

“The four days requested by police to finalise investigations is granted after which you will be brought back to court,” the magistrate said.

Investigating officer Phanuel Kaaria, attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation’s Anti-Terrorism Police Unit in Eldoret, informed the court that investigations into the suspect’s impersonation case were still ongoing.

Everlyne Amondi was arrested on June 29 by police from the DCI Eldoret International Airport. At the time of her arrest, she was dressed as an employee of Skyward Airline Service, and during a search, uniforms resembling those of aircraft engineering services were found in her possession.

“She was arrested following a tip off from staff at the airport who noted that she was not one of them,” Kaaria said.

She was found with other uniforms similar to those of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport School of engineering and a yellow and white dust coat.
The suspect then told the court it was out of curiosity to see how planes land and take off at the airport that she decided to use all means at her disposal to access the highly secured facility.

“I made the clothes at a tailor’s shop in Eldoret town. I told the tailor to make for me one uniform resembling that of the Skyward Airline employees which I then used to access the airport,” she said.

Amondi said by doing so, she did not have any ill intention and that she had gained entry to the airport severally before she was arrested.

“In fact I have been at the airport three consecutive times while donning the airline company’s uniform as I enjoyed watching how commercial and passenger planes land and take off on the run-away,” Amondi said.

She said she was so excited after gaining entry to the airport but by bad luck, she was arrested while roaming around the facility.
