North Imenti MP Raheem Dawood has advocated for reducing the salaries of elected leaders, suggesting that this could significantly decrease the public wage bill. Dawood also proposed reducing the number of MPs and abolishing the Senate, arguing that the funds saved from these measures should be redirected to essential government services.

These remarks come amid widespread public criticism of the government over the high cost of living, which has spurred anti-government protests led largely by Generation Z, including university and college students. Recently, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) faced backlash for attempting to increase salaries for State Officers, prompting them to withdraw the gazette notice announcing the pay rise.
