At least 18 people lost their lives and 19 others were injured in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh state early Wednesday when a bus collided with a milk tanker, according to police reports.

“The bus crashed into the tanker from behind, resulting in the deaths of 18 people and injuring 19 others,” said Zulfiqaar Ali from the district police chief’s office, as reported by AFP.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the incident as “heart-wrenching”. The bus was reportedly traveling from the eastern state of Bihar to the capital New Delhi, as per NDTV.

Road accidents are frequent in India, with government figures indicating 168,000 fatalities in 2022 alone. In a similar incident in May, at least 21 people died and over 50 were injured when a bus plunged into a deep gorge in Indian-administered Kashmir.
