Rice farmers preparing nursery seedbeds in Mwea irrigation farms are reporting that rats pose a significant threat to rice production in the region. Farmers, including John Munene and Pius Njogu from the Thiba section, express concerns that the rats may impact production in the rice scheme.

To combat the rats, the farmers are employing local methods, such as lighting candles in the rice paddies at night to deter the rodents. They are also seeking government intervention to address the issue that threatens their livelihood.

John Munene mentioned that rice farmers are anticipating a poor harvest due to a previous snail invasion and now the current rat infestation. “It has been two years since rats invaded the scheme and over five years since snails invaded Mwea scheme. Who will now help Mwea farmers?” Munene asked.

Pius Njogu noted that the rats are reproducing rapidly and causing significant distress for the rice farmers. “It is very cold, and we are spending all our energies fighting rats. Who will help us?” Njogu inquired.
