On Tuesday night, residents across Nairobi reported experiencing seismic movements in various locations, raising concerns about potential structural damage and safety risks. Areas including Ruaka, Lower Kabete, and Kangemi noted aftershocks following the initial report.

According to Volcano Discovery, a website dedicated to providing information related to geological activity, there are currently no details regarding the magnitude or depth of the possible quake, which was first reported around 8:31 PM.

“If confirmed, we can expect more accurate data to emerge in the next few minutes. The location, magnitude, and time mentioned are indicative, based on our best-fit seismic model,” the Volcano Discovery website stated. “They are temporary until our AllQuakes monitoring service receives more exact scientific data from a national or international seismological agency. Check back here shortly and stay safe.”

Google reported that the tremor originated 38 kilometers away from Nairobi and measured a magnitude of 4.2. The California Earthquake Authority characterizes a magnitude IV earthquake as moderate, typically felt indoors by many people and outdoors by a few during the day. At night, some individuals may be awakened by the shaking.

“Dishes, windows, and doors may be disturbed; walls can make cracking sounds. There may be a sensation similar to a heavy truck striking a building, and standing motor cars may rock noticeably,” according to the authority’s website.

Volcano Discovery noted that since 2022, Kenya has experienced three earthquakes with magnitudes above 4 and up to 5.0.
