In Kibera’s Soweto area, residents are confronting severe living conditions exacerbated by insufficient drainage and inadequate sanitation practices.

This densely populated region, renowned for its informal settlements, grapples with both hygiene challenges and substandard infrastructure, posing significant health hazards to its populace.

Local resident John Otieno voiced deep concerns about the situation, highlighting the pervasive issues. “We live in unsanitary conditions. Drainage is inadequate, and litter is everywhere. This not only harms our environment but also endangers our health, especially our children who are more vulnerable to diseases.”

The absence of designated waste disposal sites has led to widespread littering, exacerbating sanitation problems across Kibera. Residents face daily struggles due to inadequate infrastructure and the lack of essential amenities.

In response to these critical challenges, some residents have begun mobilizing efforts to raise awareness and advocate for immediate action. Their unified call demands urgent steps to enhance drainage systems, implement effective waste management practices, and elevate overall hygiene standards throughout Kibera.

While hopeful for improvements, residents emphasize the necessity of sustainable solutions that prioritize community health and well-being. They underscore the vital roles of community engagement and governmental support in addressing these enduring issues.
