Kajiado residents have been encouraged to transition from using firewood and charcoal for cooking to adopting environmentally friendly practices.

At a meeting organized by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) in Kajiado town on Thursday, locals were informed about alternative cooking methods to reduce the need for tree cutting for firewood and charcoal. Alternatives presented included modern stoves that use less wood and charcoal produced using soil and grass.

The indiscriminate felling of trees has become a significant issue in environmental conservation efforts in Kajiado.

“NEMA is developing strategies to promote modern energy solutions,” said Eric Deche, an officer with NEMA.

He added, “There are alternatives such as solar energy and energy-saving jikos that will help minimize forest destruction.”
