In Nairobi, cat owners will soon be required to pay a Sh200 license fee to the county government under the Nairobi City County Animal Control and Welfare Bill 2024. This bill, which focuses on animal care, control, and welfare, aims to foster better coexistence between residents and animals.

Set to take effect once approved by Governor Johnson Sakaja, the bill will enter a public participation phase on August 2. Cat owners will need to renew their licenses annually, ensuring their cats are vaccinated against rabies and are kept in suitable conditions.

The licensing process will be simple: owners must provide proof of vaccination and pay the fee. This initiative seeks to establish a system for monitoring and managing the cat population in Nairobi, aiming to reduce the number of stray and abandoned cats.
