Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed his backing for the Cabinet Secretaries (CS) from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). During a three-day development tour in Kisii and Nyamira Counties with President William Ruto on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, Gachagua stated that the Kenya Kwanza administration will support the four ODM CSs appointed by Ruto to lead various ministries within the inclusive cabinet.

He emphasized that Ruto’s broad-based cabinet aims to foster unity among Kenyans by bridging the existing divides in the country and pledged to assist the president in uniting citizens from diverse regions.

“Unaona Rais anajaribu uunganisha wananchi, hata wale wamekuja walikuwa ODM na ni mawaziri tutawa support. Tutawaunga mkono. Hii Kenya ni ya sisi wote na kwa hivyo rais sisi tunakuunga mkono. Unite us let us make this country move forward,”Gachagua said.

CS from ODM
Ruto appointed John Mbadi as the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury, Ali Hassan Joho as the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, Wycliffe Oparanya to lead the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs, and Opiyo Wandayi as the Cabinet Secretary for Energy.

Broad-based cabinet
After dismissing his entire Cabinet, Ruto expressed his commitment to forming a broad-based executive that would include key figures from the opposition. This marks Ruto’s second cabinet two years into his tenure as Kenya’s fifth president.

During a press briefing on July 19, 2024, Ruto stated that establishing a broad-based cabinet would facilitate the urgent and transformative changes needed in the country.
