It’s all systems go for the official conferment of Eldoret as Kenya’s fifth city. President William Ruto, along with other government dignitaries, local leaders, and athletes, will grace the ceremony at the Eldoret Sports Club grounds.

The president is scheduled to host a grand reception and breakfast for the Olympic champions at the Eldoret State Lodge on Thursday morning. Following this, he will lead the athletes and dignitaries in a grand procession to the Sports Club for the inauguration of Eldoret City.

In preparation for the event, Uasin Gishu County embarked on a city beautification campaign, which included planting trees along roads and erecting statues at key points in the city.

On Wednesday afternoon, three statues of athletes, along with depictions of a milk fountain, wheat, and maize, were installed along Oginga Odinga Street to showcase the county’s agricultural and sports heritage. However, these statues quickly became the subject of ridicule on social media, with many Kenyans criticizing the quality of the artwork.

In response, county officials removed the statues around 9 pm and transported them to an undisclosed location.
