Drama unfolded at the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) offices when new board members were reportedly barred from entry, allegedly due to orders from MCSK CEO Dr. Ezekiel Mutua.

The new members accused Mutua of directing that they be confined to a room and confronted by armed goons. According to their claims, these goons, who were reportedly armed with knives, were instructed to intimidate and harass them through physical violence and by tearing their clothes.

Cornelius Macharia, an artist and one of the newly elected board members, alleged that they were assaulted by these goons, who were reportedly accompanied by police officers from Kileleshwa Police Station.

“We held an EGM and it was decided that we have new board members. We even obtained a CR-12 meaning we are legally in office,” Macharia said.
He recorded a statement at Kileleshwa Police Station and obtained an OB for assault.

Other members who spoke demanded that MCSK Chairman Lazarus Muli vacate office, saying he has overstayed and that new leadership is needed at the society.
“He has been in office for 11 years which is unconstitutional. We want him to vacate office and allow new leadership at MCSK. Dr. Mutua should as well allow changes at the society. He cannot turn against artists who pay his monthly salary of over one million shillings,” Ephantus Safari said.
