A Nairobi businessman has taken National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to the Small Claims Court in Nairobi over an unpaid debt of Sh298,000. The businessman, Isokat Bethwel, represented by lawyer Ashioya Mogire, is seeking court intervention to recover the amount due for the sale of two dogs.

According to an affidavit filed by Isokat, he has been trying to secure payment from Wetang’ula since 2021 without success. The dispute dates back to June 11, 2021, when Wetang’ula orally contracted Isokat to sell him two male German shepherd dogs and provide one month of training for them.

Wetang’ula also requested additional items from Isokat, including four packets of dog food, a dog training sleeve, four dog leashes, choke chains, grooming brushes, a nail clipper, shampoo, kennel disinfectant, and dog harnesses, all valued at Sh348,000. Furthermore, Wetang’ula asked for staff training in dog handling at a cost of Sh50,000.

By July 13, 2021, Wetang’ula had paid Sh100,000 via a cheque from NCBA Bank, leaving an outstanding balance of Sh248,100. Despite several attempts to recover the remaining amount, Wetang’ula allegedly refused to settle the balance, responding rudely and insisting he would not pay.
