A group of farmers in Migori County has voiced concerns over losses they attribute to competition from imported maize. They claim that the influx of maize from neighboring countries has led to a drop in prices, negatively impacting their livelihoods.

The farmers have called for a halt to maize imports through the Isebania border. Mtatiro Chacha, a local maize farmer, stated, “Maize from Tanzania, Burundi, and Malawi has reduced demand for our produce.”

Currently, the price of one kilogram of maize is Ksh 25, which the farmers say is insufficient to support their families. Additionally, they expressed frustration over the rising costs of agricultural inputs. Fertilizer is being sold at Ksh 2,500 for a 50-kg bag, while the price of seeds has surged from Ksh 510 last season to between Ksh 800 and 900.
