The government has confirmed that all police officers received a salary increase starting July 1, 2024, as part of ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency and integrity within the security forces.

According to Interior PS Raymond Omollo, the salary adjustments are being implemented in phases. In the first phase, constables saw a 40 percent salary increase, with the percentage decrease applied to officers of higher ranks. The second phase, commencing in September 2024, will extend the salary adjustments to officers in the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) and the National Youth Service (NYS).

These reforms are based on recommendations from the taskforce on police reforms, chaired by former Chief Justice David Maraga. Established by President William Ruto in December 2022, the taskforce aims to overhaul the KPS, National Police Service (NPS), and NYS over a four-year period. The focus areas include leadership, oversight and accountability, institutional capacity, human resource management, and operational preparedness.

To ensure the reforms are fully implemented by 2028, the government has set up a Technical Committee on Development of Legal and Policy Frameworks, supported by reform units within the services.

“We reaffirm our commitment to fully implementing these reforms which are essential for strengthening the country’s security sector and enhancing service delivery to all Kenyans,” the statement read in part.
