The dormitory at Fr Makewa High School in Machakos was destroyed by a fire early Tuesday morning.

Located in Ikombe Division, Yatta Subcounty, the dormitory caught fire during the students’ morning preps. Fr Bernard Musango confirmed that no students were injured in the incident, stating, “All the students are safe from danger. The dormitory had a capacity of 110 students.”

Fr Musango, whose church is adjacent to the school, was among those who responded to the fire. The fire brigade from the Machakos County Government, along with students, teachers, neighbors, and local residents, helped extinguish the blaze.

Although no injuries were reported, several students lost personal belongings, including clothing, bedding, boxes, and utensils.

In Machakos County, multiple schools have been closed indefinitely due to recent fires and student unrest. This trend is also affecting Makueni County, where at least nine schools have been shut down.

The schools impacted by these closures in Machakos County include Mumbuni Boys, Muthetheni Girls, Masii Girls, Machakos School, Nyayo Girls, Masinga Boys, and Mtituni S.A Secondary.
