Police in Migori County are investigating the death of a 17-year-old boy who is reported to have taken his own life shortly after being prevented from selling his father’s cow at a cattle auction in Mawini village.

According to Assistant Chief Rose Ooko of Nyamaharaga sub-location, the boy’s body was discovered hanging from a rope in a bush a few hours after he was blocked from the auction due to the absence of his father’s national identification card. The boy had initially requested permission from the auction management to return home and retrieve the document, but he did not come back.

Ooko expressed uncertainty about what drove the boy to this tragic decision, questioning whether fear of potential disciplinary action from his father for attempting to sell the cow without authorization played a role. The boy’s body has been taken to the Migori County Level Four Hospital mortuary for an autopsy and further police investigation.

This incident adds to growing concerns about the increasing number of suicides in the county.
