United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Kenya’s Jean Njeri Kamau as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Guyana, effective September 15, 2024. Njeri’s appointment follows Kenya’s approval for her to serve as the highest-ranking representative of the UN Development System in Guyana, a country that held the Security Council presidency in February 2024.

With 20 years of experience in human rights, development, political governance, and institutional development, Njeri has a distinguished career. She recently served as Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union. Her diplomatic career also includes roles in South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, and Washington, DC.

Njeri was the first Executive Director for the Federation of Women Lawyers, Kenya, and has a notable history of work in both the public sector and civil society.

In addition to Njeri’s appointment, Secretary-General Guterres has also appointed Rita Columbia of the United States as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in North Macedonia. Recently, Guterres appointed Retno L.P. Marsudi of Indonesia as his Special Envoy on Water.
