Nine students from St Aloys Mayenya Secondary School in Kisumu East sub-county have been hospitalized after sustaining injuries when strong winds destroyed classrooms during a heavy rainstorm last evening. Some other students were injured as well but have since been treated and discharged from St Elizabeth Hospital in Chiga.

The school’s principal, Judith Atieno, reported that the thunderstorm caused significant damage, tearing apart two classrooms and the staff room. She reassured the community that the students are out of danger, although the incident left many in shock. “All is under control,” she confirmed, though the aftermath of the storm includes severe destruction, with the roofs of the affected classrooms completely blown off.

The school is now seeking assistance from well-wishers, the county, and the national government to restore normal learning operations.
