The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Leagues and Competitions Committee has postponed the Super Cup match between Kenya Police Bullets and Ulinzi Starlets, originally scheduled for Saturday, in light of the passing of Ulinzi coach Joseph Wambua. Wambua will be laid to rest on the same day, and the postponement allows his team and colleagues to pay their final respects.
The match, which serves as the official kickoff for the new season of the FKF Women’s Premier League, was set to take place at the Police Sacco Stadium before the change. Wambua had been coaching Ulinzi Starlets since 2018 and passed away on September 20 after a long battle with colon cancer.
Police FC Executive Chairman Nyale Munga expressed support for the decision, stating, “I think it’s a good move to postpone the match to give respect to the fallen soldier. He was a great coach with a promising future, but since we have no control, we just pray for God’s comfort upon his family and the club in this difficult time.”
Wambua’s coaching journey began in 2016, following an injury that cut short his playing career. He started with Kahawa Queens and made a significant impact when he took charge of the Kahawa United men’s team in 2017, leading them to an unbeaten run of 23 matches in the County League.
In 2018, he was appointed head coach of Ulinzi Starlets, and under his guidance, the team secured their third Women’s Cup last season.
Despite the setback, Nyale remained optimistic about the rescheduled match, affirming, “We are the champions and I have no doubt that Bullets will win the FKF Super Cup and the league. I only have a problem with the men’s team, which we definitely have more work to do to get where we want. As for the girls, we have full confidence in their capabilities.”
The FKF Super Cup is contested between the Premier League champions and the FKF Cup champions, serving as a curtain-raiser for the new season.
