The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has approved charges against five individuals for their alleged involvement in planning, mobilizing, and financing youth-led anti-government protests that occurred in June. In a letter dated September 26, 2024, addressed to Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) head Amin Mohamed, the DPP indicated that there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the charges.

The five individuals, who are affiliated with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, are expected to face charges of conspiracy to commit a felony under section 393 of the Penal Code. The letter also instructs that a separate inquiry file be opened to investigate potential money laundering and financial crimes associated with these activities.

Among those recommended for charges are MPs Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi (Embakasi Central) and James Mwangi Gakuya (Embakasi North), along with Gachagua’s allies George Theuri, Ngunjiri Wambugu, and Pius G. Munene.

Specifically, Mwangi and Gakuya will be charged with conspiracy to commit a felony. Additionally, Mwangi will face charges for soliciting or inciting others to commit an offense under section 391 of the Penal Code, as well as money laundering charges under sections 3, 4, and 7 of the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.
