The Migori County government workers’ union is advocating for the county government to address welfare issues impacting Early Childhood Education (ECD) teachers. This initiative follows the recent enrollment of over 600 ECD teachers into the union, who had previously hesitated to voice their concerns for fear of victimization.

Mr. Silvance Araja, the executive secretary of the Migori County government workers’ union, stated that the ECD teachers have presented several issues that need the county government’s attention. One major concern highlighted is the discrepancies in the travel allowances provided to ECD teachers.

Araja pointed out that while certificate holders among the ECD teachers receive a commute allowance of Ksh. 800 per month, labor laws recommend a minimum of Ksh. 3,000. Additionally, he noted that ECD teachers in Migori County have remained stagnant in the same job group since their employment a decade ago.

The union also emphasized the need for re-designation of ECD teachers based on their educational qualifications, which have progressed over time. The union is calling on the county government to take these concerns seriously and implement necessary reforms to improve the welfare of ECD teachers.
