Protesters blocked the Nanyuki-Rumuruti road on Tuesday morning, expressing frustration over the government’s failure to fulfill promises to upgrade the 80km stretch to bitumen standards. The road, which becomes impassable during the rainy season, has left some vehicles stranded for days, while others are forced to take the longer 151km Naromuru-Nyahururu route.

The protesters only dispersed after the intervention of armed police officers. They argued that the road, which connects Nanyuki to Laikipia County’s new headquarters in Rumuruti, has been neglected for too long.

“President Ruto has made several pledges—first as Deputy President in 2018, then during the campaigns leading to the 2022 General Election, and again earlier this year during his visit to Nanyuki when he launched the Government’s Affordable Housing Project—but nothing has been done,” lamented local resident David Mwaura.

Traders and public service vehicle operators have reported significant losses due to delays in goods delivery and high vehicle maintenance costs. They accused elected leaders of using the road’s rehabilitation as a campaign promise since 2013 without any progress.

Patients and expectant women, especially those referred to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital, are among the most affected, with some reportedly losing their lives during the journey, which can take five hours for a 25km distance.
