The impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, led by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, has taken a significant step forward after National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula confirmed that the motion met the necessary legal and constitutional thresholds. This paves the way for further debate in Parliament.
Mutuse, who emphasized that he holds no personal grudge against Gachagua, outlined 11 grounds for the impeachment, including violations of the Constitution, corruption allegations, undermining the President, and inciting inflammatory remarks. The impeachment process, supported by more than the required 117 members of Parliament, now awaits deliberation.
Mutuse also promised to present evidence, including documents, videos, and witnesses, to support his case against Gachagua. The motion cites issues such as Gachagua’s alleged interference with government functions, attacks on the judiciary, and involvement in economic crimes.
After the impeachment motion was tabled, several MPs called on the National Police Service to ensure their security. Suna East MP Junet Mohammed urged the Speaker to guarantee the safety of the 291 MPs who had signed the motion, stating, “We need assurance that the security of all MPs who signed this impeachment motion will be safeguarded. It’s important that every one of them is present on the day of voting. You know how things can go here.”
Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah also supported Junet’s request, emphasizing the need for security for all MPs involved in the motion.
