During the 2024 Magical Kenya Travel Expo, President William Ruto unveiled plans to attract digital nomads to Kenya, highlighting the newly introduced Digital Nomad Work Permit that allows remote workers from around the globe to live and work in the country. Speaking at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, he emphasized Kenya’s emerging status as a premier global tourism destination, stating that by fostering a welcoming environment for digital nomads, the government aims to position Kenya as a hub for remote work while simultaneously boosting the tourism sector.

“Digital nomads can experience the wonders of Magical Kenya every day while contributing to local economies,” President Ruto said. “This initiative not only enhances our appeal as a destination but also fosters a vibrant ecosystem that supports innovation and entrepreneurship.”

In addition, the President announced a visa-free policy for visitors from select countries, simplifying travel for tourists and business travelers and aligning with Kenya’s broader strategy to promote tourism and cultural exchange. He also introduced a new Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for transit passengers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, allowing travelers with layovers to explore Kenya and enriching their overall travel experience.

These initiatives come as Kenya’s tourism sector experiences a resurgence, generating Ksh 352 billion in revenue in 2023 from over 2 million visitors. With an ambitious target of attracting 5 million tourists annually by 2027, the government recognizes the importance of appealing to a modern audience that seeks work-life balance and unique travel experiences.
