The plea of Brenda Cheptoo, a 25-year-old woman accused of killing her two children, has been deferred by the Kericho High Court to October 15, 2024. Cheptoo appeared before Judge Joseph Sergon on Thursday but did not take the plea following an application by her defense lawyer to withdraw from the case. Senior Principal Prosecution Counsel Minoo Maundu accepted the withdrawal.

Judge Sergon ordered that Cheptoo be brought back to court on October 15, when a new defense lawyer will be provided for her. Cheptoo is alleged to have murdered her two children, aged eight and six, on July 22, 2024, and buried them in a shallow grave near her home in Sibaik village, Bureti Subcounty, Kericho.

Following the incident, Cheptoo underwent a mental health evaluation, which determined that she is of sound mind and fit to stand trial. She is currently being held at Kericho GK Women Prison.
