Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi announced that the ministry is working to revive operations at the Muhoroni Gas Turbine plant, located at the border of Kisumu and Kericho counties, to enhance electricity supply in the Southern Nyanza region.

Wandayi explained that the plant, which is operated by KenGen and has a capacity of generating 60 megawatts, ceased operations in June 2023. He noted that its inactivity has resulted in frequent power blackouts in Nyanza, Western, and Rift Valley regions.

“The non-operation of this plant has a big impact on the total capacity. We are exploring ways of bringing it back to life within the shortest time possible to address the shortage of power,” said Wandayi.

During a fact-finding mission at the plant on Saturday, the CS also revealed that the ministry has planned several projects across Nyanza, Western, and Rift Valley regions to boost electricity supply and provide long-term solutions to blackout challenges.

“To address the power shortage here, we have to expand transmission infrastructure and build new substations,” he added.

Kisumu County Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, who joined the CS on his visit, emphasized that once completed, the electricity projects will significantly benefit local sugar mills and other businesses by ensuring a reliable power supply for their operations.
