The Kenya Kwanza administration aims to increase the number of Kenyans working in Qatar from the current 67,000 to 300,000, as revealed by Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, Alfred Mutua. Speaking on Sunday during a meeting with Qatar’s Labour Minister, Dr. Ali Saeed Samikh Al-Marri, Mutua highlighted plans to amend the 2012 bilateral agreement between Kenya and Qatar to facilitate more Kenyans traveling to Qatar for work.

To streamline the process, Mutua announced that a visa center would be established in Kenya, reducing delays for job seekers. He emphasized that Kenya is keen to supply labor across various sectors, including teaching, nursing, artisan work, and engineering.

Qatar, on the other hand, is particularly interested in skilled labor in areas such as ICT, transport, and education. Dr. Ali Saeed expressed Qatar’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Kenya and providing more employment opportunities for Kenyans. “We’ll be signing a new memorandum to continue strengthening these relationships and ensuring more Kenyans get opportunities to work in our country,” he stated.

This development aligns with President William Ruto’s broader strategy to create job opportunities for Kenyans abroad. Ruto recently signed a labor mobility agreement with Germany and is also working to secure employment opportunities in Saudi Arabia and other countries.
