Kabarak University’s indoor sports teams are preparing for the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) national games following their outstanding performance at the Rift Valley regional championships, held at the University of Eldoret last weekend. The teams dominated the competition, winning titles in chess, table tennis, badminton, and karate without a single loss, significantly boosting their confidence for the national event scheduled for February 22nd and 23rd next year in Western Kenya.
In karate, both the men’s and women’s teams took first place, while also securing second and third positions in the kumite category. Karate ladies’ captain, Mapenzi Safari, attributed their victory to the team’s dedication and rigorous preparation.
“We anticipated this win because of the hard work we put in. We knew with our efforts, success was inevitable,” said Mapenzi. “The commitment we’ve shown this semester is paying off, and we’re confident we’ll perform well in the upcoming nationals.”
The badminton team also came out on top, winning all their matches in a highly competitive pool of six teams. Team captain Trevor Oduol commended his teammates for their exceptional performance and looked ahead to the national games with optimism.
“The competition was fierce, but we’re excited to have secured the win after a long time,” Trevor said. “Now, we’re training diligently for the national competition, with our eyes on the top spot. It won’t be easy, but I believe we can achieve it.”
Meanwhile, Kabarak’s women’s chess team, reigning champions at both the regional and national levels, continued their dominance. Captain Yasmin Mutheu expressed confidence in retaining their title.
“It was a tough game, but we claimed first place. We played with passion, teamwork, and a strong desire to learn from one another,” Yasmin shared. “As we head to the nationals, we’re preparing thoroughly to ensure we keep our trophy.”
In table tennis, the men’s team qualified for the nationals after finishing as first runners-up in their category.
