Kenya Signal 2 (KENSIG 2) troops stationed in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), have been awarded prestigious medals in recognition of their exceptional and dedicated service in the region. The soldiers were conferred with UN Service Medals for their efforts in restoring peace and protecting civilians in the DRC.

The awards ceremony took place on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, and was presided over by Brigadier General Ranjan Mahajan, the Acting Force Commander of the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO). Brigadier Mahajan praised the soldiers for their excellence in communication, noting that their performance had been consistently excellent since their deployment.

“The United Nations recognizes your gallant efforts as communication warriors who have supported MONUSCO operations, contributing to peace and stability in the DRC,” he said. He highlighted the Kenyan soldiers’ ability to adapt and incorporate new communication technologies, which he credited as a key factor in the mission’s success.

Mahajan also acknowledged the soldiers’ roles in data archiving for both the military and UN Police in the Southern Sector, as well as their work installing CCTV in Goma and Beni. The Base Platoon and Field Technology Section (FTS) were also recognized for their efforts in securing Force Headquarters and supporting ongoing operations.

Additionally, the KDF soldiers provided crucial communication and IT support, ensuring seamless connectivity between the Force Headquarters and MONUSCO troops operating around Goma. Their agility and adaptability helped other soldiers serving in the mission achieve significant progress.

Alongside the UN Service Medals, the soldiers received the Force Commander’s Unit Citation for their notable contributions to MONUSCO. Major Paul Chacha, Sergeant Gladys Chesimett, and Corporal Conrad Mghanga were also awarded Board of Honour certificates for their distinguished service.

Kenya Signal 2 is preparing for rotation after completing their tour of duty in the DRC peacekeeping mission. Another unit will be deployed to the region following their return.
