Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja reported on Sunday evening that one casualty occurred during the afternoon collapse of an eight-storey residential building in the Kahawa West area. The number of occupants in the building at the time of the incident was still being determined, as it housed residential units and various businesses, including a clinic.
The governor confirmed that a middle-aged woman was injured by falling rubble outside the building as it collapsed. “So far, only one casualty has been reported; a middle-aged lady, who was outside the building, was injured by the falling rubble during the collapse. She is currently undergoing treatment and is stable,” Sakaja stated in an update shortly before 5 p.m.
He added, “Casualties are expected to be minimal as the building had been condemned, and evacuations were carried out by the Nairobi City County’s Planning Enforcement team.” The building, which had only been occupied for less than a month, had received a condemnation notice prior to its collapse.
