A Missouri couple has been charged with child abuse after reportedly performing a botched circumcision on a child at their home.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the Prosecuting Attorney of Morgan County in Missouri charged Tyler Wade Gibson with child abuse and performing an unauthorized surgery.

Local news stations KRCG-TV and KMIZ-TV reported that Tyler’s wife Bailey Alexus Gibson has also been charged with child abuse.

According to the affidavit filed against Tyler, on Nov. 27 he “knowingly performed a circumcision” in his home on a child under the age of 18, which caused the child to “suffer from physical injury.”

He was also, “Not at that time a registered physician, within the meaning of the law, to practice medicine or surgery,” the affidavit said.

The affidavit also disclosed that police received a call from Columbia University Hospital just after midnight on Nov. 28 about a child who had undergone a circumcision at home in Morgan County, Missouri.

It was gathered that the procedure, done by Tyler, did not go as planned and the child was taken to Lake Regional Hospital on the evening of Nov. 27. The child was then later taken to University Hospital for treatment.

In the early morning hours of Nov. 28, Tyler left the hospital against medical advice. Police also claimed that he told them they eventually left the hospital after four hours because “they grew tired of waiting.”

“Tyler explained that he used a utility tool to perform the procedure,” the affidavit said.

When asked if he was medically trained, Tyler said, “no” but that “he had conducted research and prayed a blessing. Tyler further explained that he placed pads to catch the blood and sterilized the blade. He also mentioned that he wasn’t prepared for the amount of bleeding, so they took (the victim) to the hospital.”

Tyler was taken to the Morgan County Jail where he once again admitted to performing the circumcision, the affidavit said.

The child’s mom, Bailey, also allegedly admitted that she assisted with the procedure, court documents said.

Tyler appeared in court on Tuesday, Dec. 3, while Bailey is scheduled for an appearance on Jan. 28, 2025.
