The National Police Service (NPS) has dismissed reports that a youthful man, Ibrahim Mwiti, was abducted before his body was found at Thika Level 5 Hospital mortuary.

Media reports had earlier indicated that the 24-year-old was an activist who went missing under unclear circumstances and his body found on January 2.

In a statement on Sunday, NPS said that the late Mwiti was not an activist, according to a statement recorded by his mother on January 4, 2025.

“The National Police Service has observed with deep concern the unverified media reports alleging that Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti was abducted before he met his untimely death,” the police said.

NPS went on to give an analysis of events leading to Mwiti’s death, which according to police was as a result of a hit and run accident.

Police say that Mwiti was last seen on November 11, 2024 and was reported missing by his mother at Kamukunji Police Station on November 15.

“Notably, his body had been discovered on November 12, 2024 past midnight by Juja Traffic Police after he was fatally knocked down by a hit and run vehicle while riding a hired motorcycle Registration No. KMFG 807C at Spur Mall area along the Thika Super Highway,” police said.

NPS adds that Mwiti’s body could not be identified at the accident scene due to lack of documentation, and was moved to General Kago Hospital Mortuary as an unknown.

“Fingerprints of the deceased were taken by Juja Traffic Police, submitted to the National Registration Bureau, and the results dated November 21, 2024 positively identified the body as that of Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti.”

Police add that Mwiti’s mum on January 2, 2025 swore an affidavit to stop a post-mortem examination on his body – as per her religious beliefs.

NPS went on to caution against the “dissemination of unverified and misleading information, likely to incite the public.”

Mwiti was laid to rest on January 3, 2025 with the public linking his death to the abductions reported in the country lately.

Police officers have been on the radar over the disappearance of persons reported to have been abducted.

Billy Mwangi, Gideon Kibet, Rony Kiplangat, Bernard Kavuli, Peter Muteti, and Steve Kavingo are still missing.
