Former Likoni DCIO Charles Onyango Ka’galo who was arrested on Tuesday for receiving a Ksh.20,000 bribe has been arraigned in Mombasa.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives apprehended Onyango from his rural home in Oyugis, where he had relocated after retirement, and escorted him to Mombasa for the hearing.

Appearing before Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku on Wednesday, the ex-DCIO faced three counts of charges of abuse of office, soliciting, and receiving Ksh.20,000 as an inducement so as not to charge the complainant with a criminal offence that was under investigation.

The said offences were allegedly committed at Lovely Bar and Restaurant in Soko Mjinga within Mombasa County.

The accused denied all charges levelled against him and was released on a bond of Ksh.500,000, with a surety of the same amount or an alternative cash bail of Ksh.200,000.

The case will be mentioned on February 19, 2025.

The Commission has since committed to pursuing all bribery cases with the same vigour as high-profile cases, emphasizing the impact of corruption in undermining the quality, accessibility, and integrity of essential services and eroding trust between citizens and public institutions.
