The Ministry of Health has intensified crackdown on illegal aesthetic clinics and beauty spas that are conducting dangerous invasive surgeries.

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has said that the ministry recently conducted an assessment of aesthetic clinics and beauty spas in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Eldoret.

According to the PS, 26 aesthetic clinics were assessed, with 20 found compliant with licensing and operational standards. Three had applied for registration and were awaiting approval, while another three were operating illegally without registration.

The PS said that 102 beauty spas were inspected, with seven found to be offering invasive procedures such as micro-blading and micro-needling without proper registration or qualified personnel.

Muthoni said with the findings, there is need for strict enforcement and public awareness.

The PS has urged all beauty and aesthetic businesses to comply with legal requirements to ensure client safety. She assured the public that the ministry will continue to uphold the highest standards in the health sector to protect Kenyans from non-compliant and unsafe procedures including immediate closure of the non-compliant facilities.

The Health PS also reminded Kenyans that smoking Shisha remains illegal in the country and as such, a multi agency team will soon launch a countrywide crackdown on all the establishments where Shisha is being smoked.
