A businessman has been charged in court with defrauding two people by falsely promising them jobs abroad.
Michael Gikonyo Muthoni, also known as David Mbugua Mungai, is accused of obtaining Ksh 1.9 million from Christine Nyambura Nkong under the guise of having connections to help with overseas job placement.
The alleged offenses took place between October 5 and October 28, 2024, despite his awareness that these claims were untrue.
In a separate charge, Muthoni is alleged to have fraudulently obtained Ksh 300,000 from Purity Watiri, similarly promising job opportunities abroad but failing to fulfill his assurances.
When he appeared before the court, Muthoni pleaded not guilty to both charges. The prosecution asserted that he exploited the desperation of job seekers eager for opportunities overseas.
Trial magistrate Lucas Onyina granted the accused a cash bail of Ksh 400,000, with the case scheduled for mention at a later date.
