Gender Cabinet Secretary nominee Hanna Cheptumo on Monday told Parliament that her family is worth Ksh.420 million.

During her vetting at Parliament buildings in Nairobi, Cheptumo said the amount comprises real estate and other properties she did not list.

“Our net worth as a family is Ksh.420,049,000 or thereabouts. These are estimates made of a residential house in Karen worth about Ksh.100 million; another house in Nakuru worth Ksh.15 million… it is a very big list,” she said.

The CS nominee is the widow of the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, who succumbed to sickness in February.

Ms Cheptumo told MPs, “I don’t have money, the money I have belongs to my husband and I have not done succession.”

She claimed that part of what is due to her late husband has already been stolen in an unnamed cooperative.

“During the day we were having the church service, I was told that Ksh.250,000 was borrowed by him, yet he was lying in state. He has borrowed Ksh.250,000, and it has already been spent.”

Cheptumo is a lawyer and describes herself as an advocate for women’s rights, legal empowerment, and social justice.

President Ruto nominated her in March to fill the docket, which has been without a CS since Parliament in August 2024 rejected Stella Soi Lang’at’s nomination over her suitability for the role.

The ministry was originally held by Aisha Jumwa and was left vacant following Ruto’s Cabinet reshuffle in July 2024 after weeks of anti-government protests.
